Shirodhara Treatment

Welcome to Panchakarma Treatment

Shirodhara is a traditional Ayurvedic therapy that involves pouring warm oil or other liquids onto the forehead, typically in a continuous stream. The word “Shiro” means head, and “dhara” means flow. It’s a deeply relaxing and rejuvenating therapy that aims to balance the mind and body.

During a Shirodhara session, the client lies down on a comfortable table while a steady stream of warm oil, typically herbal-infused, is poured onto their forehead, specifically on the “third eye” area, which is believed to be the seat of human consciousness. The oil flows over the scalp and through the hair, inducing a profound state of relaxation.

Procedure for a Shirodhara treatment

  1. Preparation:

    • Set up a comfortable and warm environment, preferably in a quiet room free from distractions.
    • Ensure the client is comfortably lying down on a massage table or a special Ayurvedic wooden table called a “Dhara table.”
    • Cover the table with soft towels or sheets for comfort.
  2. Selecting the Oil:

    • Choose an appropriate oil based on the client’s body constitution (dosha) or specific needs. Common oils used include sesame oil, coconut oil, or herbal oils like Brahmi oil or Bhringraj oil.
    • Warm the oil to a comfortable temperature. It should be comfortably warm, but not too hot.
  3. Positioning:

    • The client lies on their back with their head comfortably supported by a small pillow or rolled towel.
    • Their neck should be slightly extended to allow the oil to flow smoothly from the container.
  4. Starting the Flow:

    • Hang or position the vessel containing the oil above the client’s forehead, typically positioned about 6 to 8 inches above.
    • Adjust the flow rate to a gentle, steady stream. The oil should flow consistently and evenly.
  5. Duration:

    • The duration of the treatment can vary, but it typically lasts between 30 to 60 minutes. The therapist may adjust the duration based on the client’s needs and tolerance.
  6. Massage Techniques:

    • During the treatment, the therapist may also perform gentle massage techniques on the client’s scalp, neck, and shoulders to enhance relaxation and relieve tension.
  7. Post-Treatment Rest:

    • After the oil has been poured for the desired duration, gently remove any excess oil from the client’s body and hair.
    • Allow the client to rest for a few minutes before they get up. Some practitioners recommend allowing the oil to penetrate the skin for a period after the treatment.
  8. Post-Treatment Care:

    • Advise the client to avoid washing their hair or taking a shower immediately after the treatment to allow the oil to continue nourishing the scalp and hair.
    • Provide recommendations for post-treatment care, such as drinking warm water and avoiding strenuous activities.
